Zero Tillage – Advantages of No-till Farming

No till farming is a process of sowing seeds and mix fertilizer into the ground without tilling and ploughing. The zero tillage or no till seed drill are used in this process that placed the seeds under the upper layer of the soil by digging a hole at leveled spaces. There are some significant advantages of no till farming we have mentioned below.

Reduced Soil Erosion – The soil in nature is more vulnerable to erosion caused by wind and water. Zero tillage and no till farming method makes it resistant to erosion. This really helps when plenty of mulch such as stalks, leaves, straw, pods, chaff cover is maintained on the surface of the soil to reduce erosion.

Reduces  Soil Compaction – The tilled soil is lesscompacted than the no till soil. Ploughing modifies the natural structure of the soil completely which makes the soil weak to support heavy loads, such as the wheel traffic in tillage. It also makes the soil characteristically more vulnerable to compaction. Some farmers believe that soil tilling is needed for water infiltration and root growth.  However, after a heavy rain, tilled soil comes back together again and it seems that the tillage is needed. This way tilling again leads to more tillage, and the soil structure becomes worse.

Saves Time – Only single rounds are needed to sow seeds into the soil when using no till seed drills or zero tillage planters which is very less in comparison to regular ploughing practices. Sedd drills are needed to pass over a field just once which saves the labor costs for planting seeds and can also saves time.  Easy and fast seeding process with no disc seed drill gets crops planted before the soil dries too much.

Less Fuel Costs – Fewer rounds across the field using no till seed drills dramatically reduce fuel costs.

Saves Soil Moisture – No till or zero tillage seeding lets the plant residues on the soil surface, which help keep the soil moist and protect against its evaporation caused by wind or sun.

Nutrient rich Soil – In the no tilled soil where the plant residues decompose naturally on and in its surface, the productivity of the soil increases. It makes soil nutrient rich and healthier which contributes to fewer outbreaks of harmful insects. With zero tillage process the organic matter into the soil increases resulting in more productive soil.
